Orbost Regional Health (ORH) has proudly supported its trainee Henry Hammond to complete a Certificate III in Information Technology (IT) through the Chisholm Institute.
Henry, aged 24, was raised by a single mother, and he gained exceptional customer service skills working for six years at Food Works.
The traineeship allowed Henry to remain financially stable while studying.
“Orbost Regional Health supported me to gain IT industry qualifications and experience without having to leave my community,” Henry said.
Compared to casual employment, Henry really appreciated the perks of a full-time job, like monthly days off work and paid study leave.
Each department in the health service has different technology needs, and Henry quickly picked up the skills to prioritise requests based on the most important and urgent patient needs.
“Henry picked up technical skills quickly. Supporting a local trainee’s IT career is very rewarding,” ORH’s IT manager Travis Nuyens said.
Unlike typical ‘IT Geeks’, Henry’s friendliness has led to strong interpersonal relationships across ORH.
Other staff notice when Henry asks them “is there anything else that I can help you with?”
They appreciate when Henry proactively visits to check if they need assistance.
“It is a pleasure to have Henry on our team,” ORH’s corporate services manager Stefan Kempff said.
“Henry receives good feedback about his work, helping staff with their ICT needs with competence and in a timely manner.
“We are proud and thrilled for him to have completed his traineeship ahead of time and look forward to his continued contribution”.
Gippsland Health Alliance (GHA) supports the technology needs of all public health services in the Gippsland region.
At the completion of Henry’s traineeship, GHA employed Henry to continue working onsite at ORH.
This partnership gives Henry more opportunity to learn from industry leaders and to complete further qualifications.
Henry encouraged other community members to pursue the traineeship opportunities offered by ORH.
“Think about where you are currently and how much mental energy, time and resources that you have available, but don’t regret missing out on a traineeship opportunity,” he said.
“Have a go and jump in.
The support available from education providers will surprise you”.
