As warmer weather approaches, Victorians are being reminded of the critical importance of being prepared for the upcoming fire season.
The Country Fire Authority (AFA) is urging all residents, particularly those in or near grassy or coastal scrub areas, to finalise their fire plans now to avoid making panicked decisions under the duress of an emergency.
The core message from emergency services is clear: having a well-thought-out and written fire plan is the most effective way to ensure the safety of yourself, your family, and your pets.
A comprehensive fire plan should be discussed with all members of the household and even with neighbours.
It should clearly outline the specific actions to be taken on days of Extreme or Catastrophic fire danger. This includes deciding on a trigger to leave, a safe destination and multiple travel routes.
Key components of a robust fire plan include:
– Pre-packed essentials: Prepare a bag with a change of clothes for each family member, essential medications, and toiletries. For children, a favourite toy or book can provide comfort.
– Pet preparedness: Have pet carriers, food, water, and any necessary medications ready to go. Anxious pets can be difficult to manage, so having everything prepared in advance is crucial.
– Important documents and valuables: Consider what invaluable items, such as family photos, letters, and important documents like insurance policies, passports, and wills, you would take. It is recommended to scan important documents and photos and store them digitally. Packing these items in a designated “get-away” bag well in advance can save precious time.
– Knowing your escape route: Ensure all exits from your home are clear and that keys are readily accessible. Designate a safe meeting place for your family once you have evacuated.
Authorities stress that leaving early is always the safest option. This means evacuating before there are any visible signs of a fire, such as smoke or flames.
Relying on multiple sources of information to stay aware of conditions is also vital.
The VicEmergency app is a key tool for receiving notifications and checking the daily Fire Danger Rating. Listening to ABC local radio and monitoring the VicEmergency website and social media channels are also recommended.
For those who are considering staying to defend their property, the CFA warns that this is a significant decision that carries a serious risk of injury or death, especially on days of Extreme and Catastrophic fire danger. Most homes are not built to withstand these conditions.
To assist residents in creating their plans, the CFA provides a range of resources, including a downloadable Fire Ready Kit and a template for a written plan, available at cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare.
The State Government also offers an online tool to help create a basic fire plan.
With the fire season lengthening, the time to prepare is now.
A written and practiced plan can make all the difference when seconds count.
