East Gippsland Shire Council is calling for expressions of interest from local farmers, producers and agribusiness representatives to fill two vacant positions on its Agriculture Sector Advisory Committee (ASAC).
The committee serves as council’s direct link to the paddock, providing the agricultural sector with a voice in local government decision-making and ensuring council remains informed on issues affecting one of the region’s primary industries.
Council is seeking hands-on applicants who are active in the sector and keen to help shape its future.
East Gippsland Shire Mayor, Cr Jodie Ashworth, said the committee provides a vital link between council and local primary producers.
“Agriculture is a cornerstone of East Gippsland’s economy and community,” Cr Ashworth said.
“The Agriculture Sector Advisory Committee brings together local knowledge and experience to help inform council’s decision-making on issues that matter to our farmers, producers, and agribusinesses.
“We encourage applications from people with a broad range of agricultural backgrounds who are keen to contribute their expertise and help shape the future of the industry in East Gippsland.”
The committee provides strategic advice on a range of matters affecting the sector, including industry resilience, land-use planning, emerging trends, natural disasters, water security, biosecurity concerns, and council policies that impact rural communities.
The successful applicants will join existing members comprising councillors, council staff, and representatives from key regional agricultural organisations. Committee meetings are held quarterly, with additional meetings convened as required.
To ensure broad representation from across the municipality, council offers a reimbursement of costs for members travelling from remote areas, as well as an option to join meetings online.
The successful applicants will serve out the remainder of the current committee term until November 2027, with the option of a further two-year term.
Applications close at 5pm on Monday, August 10, 2026. Interested community members can access the committee charter and expression of interest forms via the Agricultural Assistance section of council’s website.
