The Orbost Snowy Rovers juniors faced a difficult road trip last Sunday, travelling to challenge their arch-rivals and nearest neighbours, Lakes Entrance, in round 12 of the East Gippsland Junior Football Association.
Clashing with the Seagulls is always a formidable task, given the home side’s regular presence near the top of the ladder in both the under 13 and under 15 competitions in recent seasons.
It proved to be tough going for the under 13 Blues, who were chasing their first win of the season against a highly-rated opponent.
Despite playing with low numbers, Orbost Snowy battled fiercely and gave a great account of itself before the Seagulls ultimately secured the premiership points and local bragging rights with a five-goal victory. Charlotte Burt, Harlan Smith and Zayn Smith were named among the best players for Orbost, while Theodore Kuyper and Chad Russell kicked the goals.
In the under 15 encounter, the second-placed Lakes Entrance outfit proved too strong, recording its third consecutive victory by comfortably accounting for the Blues by 50 points. Mitch Herbert, Lachlan Robinson, Harley Evelyn, Allister Horner and Jacque Renaut all played their hearts out in the defeat for the Blues, while Hunter Greaves and Robinson were the goal-scorers.
The Blues will return home to host Lindenow this Sunday at Lochiel Park, with the junior action kicking off from 10.30am with the under 11 match.
