Is there anyone home?

With Orbost Police attending a burglary at a farming property near Cabbage Tree Creek last Friday, and another burglary at an unattended house in Scott Street, Orbost, over the weekend, police are issuing a reminder for anyone not living and working on properties on a full-time basis to take precautions to prevent such occurrences.

The Cabbage Tree Creek farming property had motorbikes and tools stolen.

“We’d like to remind people that if they are not at their properties full-time to make it seem as if they are,” Constable Matt Coles said.

“The owners of this property are not always about, which makes them an easy target.”

Const Coles said making it appear you are home is important to deter burglars.

“Sensor lights are a great option to do this,” he said.

The Orbost property, which is also unattended currently, has had family members attending to clean out the property following a family death.

A small motorbike, chainsaw and similar items were stolen over the weekend.

Another burglary, though this time from a farming property on Marlo Road, Orbost, that usually has someone in attendance, saw smaller items, including jewellery and a cheque removed from a chequebook, stolen.

Acting Sergeant Jamie Cummings said police are following up leads on the burglaries but would appreciate assistance from the public should anyone have further details.

“It is important to note that anyone requiring police attendance or to report a situation should call 000, not the station,” Act Sgt Cummings said.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact police this way.

“We also remind people to lock their doors when not at home.”
