Every year on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, Australians pause to remember the service and sacrifice of our servicemen and women.
Remembrance Day has been observed in Australia since the end of World War I and commemorates servicemen and women who suffered or died in the line of duty. Their sacrifice is marked by a minute’s silence at 11am, the same time the guns fell silent on the Western Front in 1918.
This year numerous services were held locally with the main service at 11am at the Orbost Cenotaph last Thursday where many people gathered and laid floral tributes and paid their respects.
RSL president, Dick Roebuck, led the service, while chaplain, Reverend Bevil Lunson, assisted.
At 5pm, members of the Orbost RSL Sub-Branch, Jarrahmond Landcare and residents of the area gathered at the Jarrahmond Avenue of Honour for a second service to acknowledge the donation from the Jarrahmond Landcare Group of purchasing a flagpole for the site and hold their own service.
