In a formal and moving ceremony held at the Bairnsdale RSL, Orbost SES volunteers and staff were awarded National Emergency Medals for their contribution to supporting emergency services and safeguarding communities during the Black Summer Bushfires of 2019/2020 which impacted East Gippsland.
The Black Summer fires burnt through more than 50 per cent of the municipality of East Gippsland.
From November 2019 to February 2020, communities and first responders throughout the area were on guard and ready for when the situation changed within their local area.
SES members (volunteers and staff) worked closely with other emergency services to help support the on ground operations to defendcommunities throughout this time.
