East Gippsland Shire Council wishes to establish a sustainable stormwater strategy for the Marlo township to address existing flooding issues brought to its attention through community feedback.
According to Marlo Ratepayers and Residents Association (MRRA) president, Shayne Boyd, drainage in Marlo has been an issue for the area, particularly during flooding events.
“When we have excessive rainfall within a short period, as we do in this area, water flows over the roads and into private properties,” Ms Boyd said.
“The present system simply does not cope – the recent very wet years of 2021/ 2022 made the inadequacies of drainage provision very apparent.”
Ms Boyd said the MRRA recommended water sensitive urban design principles be incorporated in any future housing development in Marlo, which would allow the water is captured and utilised rather than draining into the surrounding area and ultimately the river.
