Farming events worth attending

19 September 2024
in Primary Producer

September is set to be a busy month with several events scheduled across different farming enterprises, all the way into mid-October.

WORMS IN SHEEP

Have recent wet summers and warmer winters increased the impact of Barbers Pole and other sheep worms on your enterprise?

Do you think you may have an issue with drench resistance but aren’t sure how to find out?

Want to hear about the latest management strategies for decreasing worm burden in your sheep flock?

Workshops with Dr Ben Blomfield, a veterinary consultant from Melbourne University’s Mackinnon Project, will kick off a three-year Enhanced Producer Demonstration Site (EPDS) project on sheep worm management.

Buchan:

Wednesday, September 18, 10am–12pm

Buchan Football Clubrooms

5609 Buchan-Orbost Rd, Buchan

RSVP: Tuesday, September 17

Swifts Creek:

Wednesday, September 18, 5pm-7pm

Swifts Creek DEECA office, 13 McMillan Avenue, Swifts Creek

RSVP: Tuesday, September 17.

Limited opportunity exists for sheep producers to access subsidised multi-drench resistance testing as part of this project.

For more information and to express your interest contact Keren Walker, AgVic.

These events are a part of a Producer Demonstration Site (PDS) project, joint-funded by Meat & Livestock Australia and Agriculture Victoria, being run in conjunction with the Bairnsdale BestWool Best Lamb Group and supported by the Gippsland Agricultural Group.

WHAT IS MY PADDOCK TELLING ME?

A practical workshop on grasses, weeds and spraying techniques, presented by the East Gippsland Small Property Network will occur next month.

Participants can learn how to identify local grasses and weeds to enhance their space.

Hands-on learning will help people discover how to

calibrate and use a spray unit for effective weed control, along with expert guidance from an agronomist.

This session will allow you to apply new skills to create a thriving well-maintained property ideal for small landholders.

The group will also look at the current African Love Grass control trial plots at the Gippsland Research Farm.

Tickets must be booked online at humanitix.

The event is free and a light supper will be provided.

WHEN: Monday, October 14, 6pm–8pm

WHERE: Gippsland Agriculture Centre – Bengworden Rd (Bairnsdale airport).

PRACTICAL ANIMAL HUSBANDRY WORKSHOP

Another great day aimed at small property owners but a practical session to suit a wide range of property owners.

The session is a comprehensive workshop overview of vital livestock care practices for those committed to high standards of animal welfare.

The first session will be run by Dr Alison Gunn, covering key aspects of animal husbandry such as disinfection techniques, pain relief methods and ensuring livestock well-being.

There will also be a discussion on the ideal timing for procedures like lamb marking, tagging, castration and dehorning, along with the necessary equipment and safe restraint methods.

Alison will also highlight vaccination protocols to help prevent diseases and maintain herd health.

The second session will be led by Dr Jane Vaughan, focussing on large animal euthanasia, and knowing when to call a vet.

Dr Vaughan also has a great deal of experience with animals like alpacas.

Morning tea and lunch will be provided, contact StockSense at the Victorian Farmers Federation.

WHEN: Friday, October 18, 10am-2pm.

WHERE: Gippsland Agriculture Centre – 345 Bengworden Rd (Bairnsdale airport).
