In an inspiring display of unity and care, 25 residents of Orbost came together for R U OK? Day on Thursday, September 12.
Hosted by Orbost Neighbourhood House, the event was designed to promote mental health awareness and encourage meaningful conversations about wellbeing and support.
The group boarded a bus to Cape Conran, where they spent the day walking the newly installed boardwalk, searching for hidden treasures along the beach, berry-picking and simply soaking in the tranquil surroundings.
The national charity R U OK? plays a vital role in suicide prevention, focusing on building the motivation, confidence and skills of individuals to reach out and check on others who may be struggling. By fostering these critical conversations within personal support networks – such as friends, family, and colleagues – the charity aims to ensure that help can be offered long before a crisis point is reached.
Melissa Healey, manager of Orbost Neighbourhood House, highlighted the importance of the day’s setting in facilitating genuine interactions.
“Cape Conran was a lovely setting to check in with people and have a conversation about being kind always,” Ms Healey said.
The event mirrored the core message of R U OK?, emphasising the need to invest in personal relationships and stay alert to signs of distress within our communities.
Through initiatives like this, R U OK? is empowering everyday people to be the help-givers in their lives, bridging the gap between informal support and professional assistance.
As participants enjoyed the peaceful beauty of Cape Conran, the day was a reminder of how simple acts of connection can make a significant impact in preventing feelings of isolation and hopelessness.
