Forest park in Orbost is set to open soon.
Funding was provided through the East Gippsland Shire Council and the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications via the Regional Recovery Partnerships program to modernise Orbost’s premier passive recreation area and visitor rest-stop.
The upgrade works have included a new accessible toilet block with baby change facilities, access improvements, new paths, increased parking, an adventure playground, barbecues, picnic facilities and covered shelter.
“We are aiming to open Forest Park in Orbost in the coming weeks,” East Gippsland Shire Council General Manager Assets and Environment, Stuart McConnell said.
“The community can keep an eye on our social media pages for updates closer to the weekend.”
Community consultation for feedback on the layout of the proposed plan was completed in June 2021.
Work kicked off in January this year to start upgrading the park, with contractor Whelans Group Investments Pty Ltd awarded the contract to carry out the work.
East Gippsland Shire Council is also planning to renew approximately 115 metres of footpath along Nicholson Street, between McLeod Street and Clarke Street in Orbost.
The upgrades aim to promote safe pedestrian movement and ensure compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 while reducing ongoing maintenance costs.
Potential landscaping next the footpath seeks to enhance the visitor appeal of the town.
The scope of works includes removal of certain trees to prevent further root damage, renewal of footpath pavement, and investigation of underground drainage.
A Project Reference Group (PRG) will be formed to progress the development of this project.
PRG members will contribute local knowledge about issues that are relevant to the project and provide representation for a variety of stakeholder interests to ensure the views and interests of the community are represented and relevant stakeholders are engaged.
Funding has been allocated for design; the commencement of construction is subject to the success of future funding approval.
This staged approach reflects a commitment to thoughtful planning and responsible fiscal management to deliver a sustainable and beneficial infrastructure upgrade for Orbost.
