It was a great week for the Orbost Bowls Club in Gippsland Bowls Region pennant, with both the midweek and weekend sides victorious.

Division two recorded its third win of the season in the midweek section and are now second on the ladder.

Despite only winning the one rink, the Green Machine got home in a close one, 56-52.

Ron Hatcher’s team of Maurice Frank, Des Edwards and Beryl Dyce had an outstanding win of 32-7, which was the difference between the two combatants.

A much needed clean sweep at home has the weekend division one pennant side now up to 11th spot, Orbost too good late in the day, winning 67-47.

Geoff Lynn, Frank, Peter Coulton and Geoff Robinson led the way with a 27-13 victory, while Dyce, Bruce Kneebone, Karen Chenney, Geoff Aitken (21-18), and Ron Hatcher, Scott Farnell, Robyn Kellow and Bradley Lancaster (19-16) all had great afternoons.

BAIRNSDALE GOLF INVITATION 4s TOURNAMENT

It was a great result for the Orbost ladies team of Karen Chenney, Gwen Hatcher, Margaret Coulton and Jan Lynn, who finished runner-up among quality competition at the recent Bairnsdale Golf Bowls Club’s Invitation fours tournament.

CLUB SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIPS

The next club championships event will be the mens and womens singles with the knockout matches beginning on Thursday, November 21, with a roll up at 9.45pm.

Entries for the singles championships close at 9am on Thursday, November 21.

SOCIAL BOWLS

There were two successful afternoons of social bowls last week, although Sunday’s windy weather proved challenging.

Thursday’s winning pair was Ron Hatcher (skip) and the visiting Ralph Harding, while Sunday’s winning team was Ron Hatcher (skip) Jurgen Fichtner, Lyn Broersen and Frank.

BAREFOOT/TWILIGHT BOWLS

Twilight Bowls is being held every Friday evening until the end of February 2025, except for a short break over Christmas and the New Year.

The club is opened at 5.30pm every week and people can come along at any time after that and stay for as long as they wish.

The club’s barbecue facilities will be ready for use, so why not bring along your own meal and make an evening of it.

The licensed bar and eftpos will also be available, with bowls provided and some training in the basics of bowling available if required.

To protect the green, players are asked to wear flat soled shoes, socks or bare feet.

Weekend pennant skips, Geoff Aitkin and Brad Lancaster were both part of Orbost clean sweep over Howitt Park at home last Saturday. (PS)
Weekend pennant lead bowler Geoff Lynn was in outstanding form on the weekend against Howitt Park, part of 27-13 winning rink. (PS)
