Forest Park ready

21 November 2024
in Local News
The opening of Orbost's Forest Park has been long awaited, and the smiles said it all as Ethan Marks and his sisters, Olivia and Charlotte Durston were thrilled to try the new playground the moment school finished last week.

The opening of Orbost's Forest Park has been long awaited, and the smiles said it all as Ethan Marks and his sisters, Olivia and Charlotte Durston were thrilled to try the new playground the moment school finished last week.

Orbost’s newly redeveloped Forest Park opened to the public last week following months of hard work.

Its features include a state-of-the-art playground for kids to explore, open spaces for picnics, barbecues and family fun, the new Hammond Family Shelter, offering a great spot to relax, modern toilet facilities and landscaped gardens.

The major upgrade will encourage the travelling public to take a break and provide healthy, active outdoor options for locals, according to Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester.

Mr Chester said the improvements to Forest Park will deliver social and economic benefits to Orbost.

“I was able to convince the previous Federal Government to allocate $1.3 million from its Regional Recovery Partnerships program for the Forest Park redevelopment effort in 2021,” Mr Chester said.

“Improving the old, tired facilities has revitalised and modernised Orbost’s recreation area, visitor rest-stop and gateway to the East Gippsland Rail Trail, which will encourage more travellers to take a break.

“The works have included a new toilet and amenities block, increased parking, an upgraded playground and installation of a picnic area, which all complements the restoration of the Snowy River trestle bridge and the East Gippsland Rail Trail.

“Local firm Whelans Group Investments has carried out the work, with landscaping completed by Elite Concreting and Landscaping.

“We need to continue to invest in community infrastructure that will encourage visitors to stay longer in our region and support our local businesses.”

There will be an official opening of the park on Friday, November 29 at 10.30am, where there will be a community barbecue lunch, games for the kids and a teddy bears picnic.

East Gippsland Shire Council thanked lead contractor, Whelans Group Investments, for their efforts on this project.

The Orbost Forest Park upgrade project was funded by generous grants from the Australian Government, and a substantial contribution from Council.

This project reflects council’s commitment to creating spaces that enhance the community and environment.

One-year-old Darcy Paterson seemed to give the junior slide the seal of approval at Forest Park on Thursday.
