Orbost’s midweek division two pennant side was again successful in round six of the Gippsland Regional Bowls.
The Green Machine moved up to second on the ladder, after an impressive 62-40 victory over Lakes Entrance 2, Orbost clinching all three rinks.
Janice Lynn, Kerry Edwards, Margaret Coulton and Geoff Lynn led the way with an impressive 21-7 victory, well supported by Lilia Scarborough, Lynette Broersen, Bruce Kneebone, Gwen Hatcher (22-16) and Beryl Dyce, Jurgen Fichtner, Maurice Frank and Ron Hatcher (19-17).
In Saturday pennant, the division one side made the long trek to Maffra, the high temperatures forecast seeing the game commencement time brought forward from 1pm to 11am.
The day was less than ideal for bowls, with the game being halted twice due to the temperature reaching 36 degrees and eventually being stopped altogether with only 16 ends completed.
Maffra declared the winner, 66-23, the loss means Orbost slip to twelfth on their ladder.
CLUB SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Ladies Championships were not held due to lack of entries; however, the men’s championships were able to be held with the knockout rounds being held last Thursday.
The bowlers going through to the grand final on Thursday will be Ron Hatcher and Greg Rankin.
Due to the draw, Rankin had to play two matches beating Maurice Frank 25-19 in a morning game and Kneebone 25-17 in the afternoon.
Ron had only one morning match winning 25-7 against Geoff Lynn.
Spectators are welcome next Thursday to watch the finale with the roll up commencing at 9.45am.
SOCIAL BOWLS
Both afternoons of social bowls had uncomfortable weather last week, with Thursday being hot and Sunday very humid causing player numbers to be lower than usual.
After the men’s singles matches on Thursday morning, a small group of players competed in the afternoon with the winning team being Vanessa Frank (skip), Broersen and Ralph Harding.
Sunday’s games were played in Scroungers format however the winners were drawn from a hat, due to several withdrawals during the games due to the humid conditions.
The lucky winners were Ron Hatcher and Broersen.
BAREFOOT / TWILIGHT BOWLS
Twilight Bowls was successfully held last Friday, although the club’s music lady, Deb Bozsan was unable to attend, however she should be back this week.
Twilight Bowls is being held every Friday evening until the end of February 2025, except for a short break over Christmas and the New Year.
The Club will be opened at 5.30pm and people can come along at any time after that and stay for as long as they wish.
The Club’s barbecue facilities will be ready for use, so you can bring along your own meal and make an evening of it.
The licensed bar and karaoke also will be available, with bowls provided and if required some training in the basics of bowling can be arranged.
To protect the green, players are asked to wear flat soled shoes, socks or bare feet.
