For local families, Christmas simply wouldn’t feel complete without the Orbost Christmas Eve Festival.
This cherished tradition is set to transform Nicholson Street into a hub of holiday cheer on December 24, and the festivities promise to impress once again.
Organising this major event on Orbost’s calendar is no small feat.
A dedicated but small committee works tirelessly, planning for months to bring the festival to life through the generous donations of many businesses.
Despite the challenges, their efforts are rewarded with a vibrant evening filled with joy, laughter and community spirit.
Nicholson Street will be closed between McLeod and Salisbury Streets starting at 5pm, with the main festivities kicking off at 6pm.
Visitors are encouraged to leave the cooking at home and instead support local eateries or enjoy delicious offerings from food stalls.
“Don’t worry about cooking dinner,” Samantha Reynolds said.
“Come on down and grab something tasty from our local food vendors.
“Whether it’s a sausage from the Orbost Cricket Club, baked potatoes from the Orbost Hockey Club, or treats from one of the many food vans we’ve introduced this year, there’s something for everyone.”
Market coordinator, Jane Crofts is thrilled with the response from stallholders this year.
“The variety is phenomenal,” she said.
“From local honey to homemade jewellery, you’ll find something special. And don’t forget to explore the local shops, many of which will stay open for last-minute gift shopping.”
At the northern end of Nicholson Street, older kids can enjoy activities like jumping castles, a petting zoo featuring friendly goats, face painting and the ever-popular Segway course which children are reminded to adhere to the safety requirements including wearing closed in shoes and height/weight restrictions.
Younger children will be thrilled at the soft play toddler area as well as the arts and crafts to be made or decorate a gingerbread man stall.
Adults feeling nostalgic will also be thrilled to find Bertie Beetle show bags, whereas the kids always love to see the glow-in-the-dark goodies and showbags which are on offer.
Proceeds from these sales go directly back into the festival fund to ensure next year’s event is just as spectacular.
The “Minute to Win It” Business Challenge is sure to bring some friendly rivalry to the evening.
Starting at 6.45pm outside Chooky’s Roost, local business representatives will face off in a series of quick, entertaining challenges.
Winners will take home Orbost and District Chamber of Commerce and Industry vouchers.
Of course, no Christmas Eve would be complete without a visit from Santa.
Arriving on the back of a fire truck at 7.45pm, Santa will hand out lollies and icy poles to eager children.
Families are reminded to collect their Santa tickets earlier in the evening from the Orbost Visitor Information Centre market stall to keep things running smoothly.
As the evening draws to a close, the celebration will move to Forest Park for Carols by Candlelight and a dazzling fireworks display at dusk. Before heading to the park, be sure to catch the announcement of the district’s best Christmas lights and the raffle prize winners.
A map and entry form for the Christmas Lights competition are included in this edition, with voting closing at noon on Christmas Eve.
The Orbost Christmas Eve Festival is a perfect blend of community, festivity, and holiday magic. So, gather your family and friends, and join in the fun – it’s a night not to be missed!
