Blues fall short against Saints

Orbost went down to St Mary's Nagle last Saturday in round eight of the Bairnsdale Cricket Association at Nagle College, dismissed in the 38th over for just 119. Tim Osborn (pictured) worked hard to get the runs up, making 47 alongside Luke Endley, who made 26.

Orbost suffered a disappointing loss to St Mary’s Nagle in round eight of the Bairnsdale Cricket Association last Saturday at Nagle College.

The Blues won the toss and elected to bat, the score ticking along nicely early, before skipper Curtley Farley was run out for nine when looking set for a big score.

Nagle skipper, Ricky Tatnell rotated his bowlers cleverly as Harvey Spaxman, Scott Scicluna and Brandon Sauer all claimed vital breakthroughs, Orbost in trouble at 5/39.

In form all-rounder, Luke Endley (26) and Tim Osborn (47) worked hard to get the innings back on track, keeping the score ticking along and sharing the strike.

But when Spaxman (2/24) picked up Endley and Osborn went leg before to Tatnell (3/17), the Blues were in trouble at 7/109.

The tail offered minimal resistance, with Danny Hack picking up 2/30, as Orbost was dismissed in the 38th over for just 119.

With Brayden McCarrey (53) and Spaxman (26) putting together an opening partnership of 69, Nagle made short work of the total, home in the 26th over for the loss of just three wickets.

McCarrey’s half century came off just 57 balls, containing four boundaries and his regulation maximum.

Endley was the pick of the bowlers for the Blues, picking up 2/23.

Orbost’s next game is at home on January 11 against arch rival, Lakes Entrance.

Unfortunately “B” grade had to forfeit to Paynesville last Saturday, with its next game also scheduled for January 11 against Buchan at the home of the caves.

Orbost had a bye in last week’s round of the 20/20 competition, with the next game on January 7 against Lakes Entrance at the Lakes Recreation Reserve.

The junior competition is in recession for the school holidays, with the under 13s next match against Lucknow on January 30, with the under 16s playing Lindenow South Glenaladale at the Glenaladale Recreation Reserve.

Orbost’s Nick Davis took a suspenseful catch during the match against St Mary’s Nagle, almost dropping the ball before securing it.
