Despite the hot conditions last Saturday it was great to see a large field contest the Marlo Triathlon, a collaboration between the Riviera Triathlon Club and the Orbost Snowy Rovers Football Netball Club.
The event attracted entries from all over Victoria, with the premier division, the Marlo Sprint Triathlon, led home by world class athlete, Daniel Barry.
The event was established in 1992 and has been a constant in the local summer activities most years, with only bushfires and COVID in recent times preventing the staging of the event which is popular with locals and tourists.
Barry finished the 500 metre swim, 21 kilometre bike ride and 5500 metre run in one hour five minutes and 10 seconds, finishing well ahead of Ben Osmand (1.09.59) and Arki Vardy (1.11.58).
Alexandra Keith (1.14.34) was the first woman home in eighth place overall.
Other winners in this section were Old n Young (male mixed team), Clancy Bennett (local hero men) and Courtney Shinn (local hero female).
In the fun triathlon, the winner was Benjamin Bailey (43.02), who finished ahead of local hero winner Lachlan Fenner (46.18) and Craig Herbert (50.13).
The first female home was Danielle Monaghan (48.14), with other divisional winners including son, Nash (under 18 boys), Brayden Fenner (under 18 male local hero), Bree Kenny (female local hero), Lara Seal (under 18 girls and local hero), “A” Team (male mixed team) and Andovac (female team).
The kids races again proved to be a winner and a fantastic way to introduce triathlon to a new generation, with 43 eager mini athletes blitzing the three disciplines in and alongside the Snowy River with overwhelming support from family and friends watching closely.
Winners included Bowie Batalha (male 5-6 years), Jarvis Rogers (male 7-11 years), Sophie Atkin (female 5-6 years) and Deegan Dyer (female 7-11 years).
Next year’s event will be held on January 10.
