On Australia Day, we celebrate all the things we love about Australia; a sense of a fair go, lifestyle, democracy, the freedoms we enjoy but particularly our people.
Australia Day is about acknowledging and celebrating the contribution that every Australian makes to our contemporary and dynamic nation.
From our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to those who have lived here for generations, to those who have come from all corners of the globe to call our country home.
The marking of January 26 is an important date in Australia’s history and has changed over time: starting as a celebration for emancipated convicts and evolving into what is now a celebration of Australia that reflects the nation’s diverse people.
More than half of all Australians participate in Australia Day
attending events organised by State Governments, local councils, community groups, community groups or getting together with family and friends.
In addition, more than 16,000 new Australians become citizens on Australia Day.
Orbost Rotary Club is once again hosting its Australia Day event and local award ceremony, along with a free breakfast beginning at 7.30am and concluding at 9am prior to the formal proceedings.
Rotarians will ensure no stomach is left hungry with an assortment of hot and cold varieties such as egg and bacon rolls, cereals, fruit salad and tea, coffee, milo and juice.
Once you’ve finished breakfast, gather the kids and head down to play some of the traditional games on offer but be sure to come
along with your best Aussie hat on as there will be a prize for the winner.
Formal proceedings will include the Australia Day awards – Event of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Citizen of the Year, flag raising ceremony, National Anthem and cutting of famous Australia Day ’26ers’ lamington cake, which is once again being donated by the Orbost Bakery.
Come along and enjoy camaraderie and friendship in the community of Orbost.
Please note the East Gippsland Shire Council Shire celebrations for community and award nominees are invited to the Australia Day Awards on Saturday, January 18 at 12.30pm at Forest Park in Orbost.
