On Saturday, January 11, the committee of the East Gippsland Timber Milling Project came together at Lion Marguerite Byrne’s home in Paynesville for a celebratory gathering.
This event marked an opportunity to express gratitude to all committee members for their dedication and contributions to the project since its inception in response to the devastating 2019/20 Black Summer Bushfires.
A highlight of the afternoon was the special recognition of Simon and Fran Cohn from the Bruthen Lions Club. Simon, who served as chairman, and Fran, who held the role of secretary over the past 18 months, were both awarded the prestigious James D Richardson Award for their combined service and unwavering commitment to the project.
The gathering also celebrated the successful collaboration between Lions and Rotary in delivering this impactful community service project.
It was acknowledged as a testament to what can be achieved when service organisations join forces for the greater good.
Looking forward the East Gippsland Timber Milling Project is entering a phase of hibernation. Its assets have been safely stored at the Licola Wilderness Village, ready to be mobilised when future disasters strike the district.
This gathering was not just a moment of reflection but also a celebration of the spirit of service and community resilience fostered by the project.
