Eighteen months ago, an anonymous donor made a life-changing contribution to Bairnsdale St Vincent de Paul Society in the form of financial assistance for the purchase of a car.
Inspired by a local article highlighting the local volunteer group’s ambition to expand its services, this donation became the catalyst for a remarkable journey of growth and impact.
The local group, known as Bairnsdale Conference, dedicated to providing a hand up to people in need, now has the means to expand its good works and range of support services to communities in far East Gippsland.
The expansion was driven by a clear gap in community services.
A local feasibility study, conducted by the conference, identified the need for a presence in Orbost – which was supported by a detailed questionnaire (distributed to local community services) to pinpoint these gaps and opportunities for support.
With approval granted, Bairnsdale Conference has since built meaningful connections with key community organisations in the area including Bush Nursing Centres, Moogji Aboriginal Council, Orbost Neighbourhood House, the Community Food Pantry and Orbost Community Health to begin what was set out to be achieved – bring the ethos of support and compassion to communities that previously felt isolated by distance from regional towns.
“The support from the Orbost community has been overwhelming,” member of Bairnsdale Conference, Marlene Constable said.
“While this is a new and evolving initiative, we are taking careful steps to ensure we build a truly supportive and impactful presence.”
Recently, members of Bairnsdale Conference provided their first in-person service in Orbost.
“The expansion into Orbost is a significant step in ensuring that more people in our region have access to the vital support they need,” treasurer of Bairnsdale Conference and Regional Council, Tony Bandiera said.
“This growth reflects our commitment to extending our reach and making a tangible difference in the lives of individuals and families who rely on us.”
They are now available by appointment at the Orbost Neighbourhood House – aiming to provide a safe space for community members seeking assistance and information.
