No horses, plenty of fun

With the sun out, the shade was the place to be at the Buchan races last Saturday. Pictured are Nicholas Bain, Melissa and Dino Zagami, Brad, Bridgette and Jack Sedman, Harry and Margaret Maxwell, Linda Lake, Brett and Sue Stewart.

Unfortunately last week’s deluge of rain meant the Buchan and Gelantipy Racing Club’s track at Canni Creek was deemed unsuitable for racing by Racing Victoria stewards.

However, the club decided to push and on stage a phantom meeting, which was supported by dedicated racegoers, many who have been attending the Buchan races for decades.

People still attended from across Victoria and the regular bus visitors from Sale and the Latrobe Valley were in attendance.

The day included all the regular cup day action, including fashions on the field with plenty of events and prizes to keep everyone entertained as they listened to the on-course entertainment, feasted on the food trucks and indulged in a beverage or two.

The club was delighted with the turn out given the circumstances and looks forward to hosting an even bigger and better event in 2026.

Sheryl Dyson, Kellie Wimpress and Kate Allen were happy to be photographed at the phantom meeting of the Buchan and Gelantipy Racing Club held last Saturday. Unfortunately the rain earlier in the week made the track unsafe for racing.
Michael and Carmel Perkins from Hampton Park made the trek to Buchan for the historic races, an item on their bucket list. It’s now ticked off but they will return one day soon to see the horses take to the track.
Drew and Blake Fairweather from Sale were delighted to catch up with Lake Tyers Beach’s Sam Ditchburn at Canni Creek last Saturday.
Sonet Van Wyk, Tania Sparks, Terry O’Riley, Shirley Pattison, Bill Pearson, Annie O’Riley and Steven Whelan were trackside at Canni Creek.
Grace Kenyon and mother Kate were part of the large crowd who supported the Buchan and Gelantipy Racing Club last Saturday.
Kenny Wegener and Chicken McGuinness were all smiles, enjoying a cold drink after making the long trek from Sale to the Canni Creek races.
Peter Stephenson, Daryl and Matt Ogilive made the journey on the bus from Sale and were happy to be enjoying the local Buchan hospitality trackside.
Darcy Smith and John Walker are regular Buchan racegoers, making the trek each year by bus from Sale, enjoying the festive atmosphere.
Live music was a popular feature of the Buchan Cup meeting with no horses in attendance due to the rain making the track unsafe.
Despite the track being unsafe for racing, it was great to see a healthy crowd on track at Buchan to take in the hospitality and festivities.
Inca Pickens-Gill and Christine Huggins from Nowa Nowa were having a great day at the Canni Creek despite the horses not being in attendance.
Nick Hayllar, Kate Biles and Glenn Bills renewed acquaintances at the annual Buchan races.
Mick Carroll, Chris Andy and Ash Carroll were enjoying the casual day of socialising at Canni Creek.
