Orbost Cricket Club finished the season in the best possible way, outclassing Metung Swan Reach in a comprehensive outright victory in Bairnsdale Cricket Association round 14 action at the Swan Reach Recreation Reserve last Saturday.
The victory moved the Blues from ninth on ladder to a finishing position of seventh, which looked out of reach throughout the season when they languished on the bottom of the table.
But a determined post-Christmas assault, which has seen them score three of their four season victories, has seen them finish with enthusiasm and hope for the future.
The Swans resumed in their second dig at 5/54 and were quickly dismissed for 72, batting just 28 overs in another poor display from a club that finds its self at the crossroads, with plenty to do on and off the field before the first ball is bowled in October.
Only Billy Andrews (13) offered any resistance for the Swans on day two, with Nick Hulme (4/16) and Mitchell Farley (3/17) the major wicket takers.
Hulme finished with an impressive 8/34 for the game, while Farley looks a promising young bowler who will take plenty of top grade wickets in the years to come.
Orbost chased down the 27 required for victory in just five overs for the loss of just one wicket, enjoying an early finish as many other sides in the competition toiled in the heat.
In “B” grade Orbost’s season ended with a comprehensive loss to ladder leader Bruthen at the Orbost Recreation Reserve.
Batting first the Blues were dismissed in the 26th over for just 53 with Mark McDonald top scoring with 21.
Bruthen was keen for an early finish, knocking the runs over in just eight overs for the loss of eight wickets.
Jordan Ross again impressed with the ball for Orbost picking up 2/30.
The Blues finished the season in 11th place on the ladder, winning two matches in a tough season for the club at senior level.
