Year 12 students from
Mallacoota P12 recently spent time aboard the Gypsy Princess with the East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority’s (CMA) staff member and former P12 student, Bryce Watts-Parker, as part of their four-day camping expedition.
In between soaking downpours, the students embarked on an insightful tour of the Wallagaraugh and Genoa Rivers.
This educational excursion provided an overview of the rivers’ history, the CMA’s operations and the collaborative efforts with landholders, community groups and partner agencies.
Key discussions included the impacts of the recent bushfires on the rivers and the importance of active management to treat transformative weeds and promote positive outcomes for river health in a local context.
The importance of waterways in relation to their recreational, economic and conservation values was an ongoing topic of conversation on the boat tour, as these topics directly link to the student’s studies and exams.
The East Gippsland CMA was pleased to offer students the chance to explore their local rivers by boat, expanding on their knowledge and discussing topics that Bryce is both knowledgeable and passionate about.
