Local authors Glenys Hammond and Judy Jerkins launched their book ‘THE HOUSES – Cape Conran before 1986’ last Saturday at Marlo Angling Club.
“Myself and Judy would like to thank to all of the campers, house holders and friends who attended, shared their memories, purchased raffle tickets, books and the DVD too,” Ms Hammond said.
“I appreciate your support.”The books are now available at The Local Marlo store and the Slab Hut Tourist Information Centre.
More book signings will be announced in the coming weeks.
The book details the history of the area, how the houses came to be and what happened to them.
Between 1945 and 1957 a small group of Orbost farmers and their mates built 14 small shacks, known as ‘The Houses’, on Crown Land at the beach on the East Cape.
In 1960 Cape Conran was reclassified as a Reserve for Public Purposes and in 1977 the residents were advised that their annual leases would not be renewed beyond 1985.
By 1986 all 14 shacks had vanished.
