The Future of Orbost and District (FoOD) project is hosting a dynamic community workshop to explore a bold question: What role could industrial hemp play in the post-forestry future and what might it look like?
With the end of timber harvesting on public land, the Orbost and district community stands at a pivotal moment of transition and opportunity.
A new identity is emerging, grounded in our landscapes, heritage and collective spirit, while looking boldly toward a future of sustainability and innovation.
To help shape that future, the community is invited to a participatory workshop.
This interactive event will explore how industrial hemp could become a catalyst for local renewal – through sustainable construction, climate-smart agriculture, and bio-based innovation.
“This is about more than finding a replacement for forestry – it’s about reimagining
what Orbost can be,” chair of FoOD,
Liz Mitchell said.
“We’re inviting the community to help co-create a new story for our region – one rooted in place, driven by people, and connected to global opportunities like hemp innovation.”
Workshop highlights include:
– A showcase from Hexcore, leaders in sustainable materials, who are using hemp to develop cutting-edge composite products that could power the next generation of green construction.
– A collaborative futures visualisation process with The Experience Place, supporting participants to map a bold, community-led narrative for Orbost’s next chapter.
– Insights from local innovators and emerging hemp initiatives shaping a cleaner, circular
and regenerative local economy.
“There’s growing momentum around industrial hemp and its potential to create real, local jobs while supporting environmental and social outcomes,” Ms Mitchell said.
“It’s early days, but if we do this right, Orbost could become a leader in the bioeconomy and clean innovation. “It’s up to us.”
And importantly, this event is not just for those already working with hemp.
“This session is for anyone who cares deeply about the future prosperity of our district,” added Ms Mitchell.
“You don’t need to have a direct interest in hemp – just a passion for shaping a strong, inclusive, and resilient future for
our community.”
The event is part of FoOD’s broader mission to bring people together across sectors to navigate change collaboratively and shape a thriving, connected future for the district.
All community members are welcome – farmers, creatives, young people, entrepreneurs, tradies, elders and everyone in between.
This free event will be held on May 20, 10am-12pm – with light refreshments available. Registrations are essential and can be made by contacting FoOD via phone or email.
The FoOD project is a response to the impacts of the end of native timber harvesting in Victoria’s state forests and the need to transition the local economy.
The purpose of the project is to build on to Orbost and district’s existing strengths and leverage opportunities for supporting positive economic, social, and environmental outcomes.
The project is delivered by the Orbost and District Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which is overseen by a community-led governance group and supported by the Victorian Government.
