There was disappointment for Orbost Snowy Rovers in East Gippsland Junior Football Association matches last Sunday against Lucknow at the Lucknow Recreation Reserve.
The under 13 match saw the sides go into the clash evenly matched with three wins apiece, the Blues in third position just above the Magpies on percentage.
In a tight opening term both sides found it tough to score as the defences of both outfits dominated proceedings, a solitary point from the Blues enough to see it the leader at the first break.
The Magpies had the better of the second quarter, kicking two goals to one, opening up a five-point advantage at half time with the match still very much in the balance.
Lucknow again made the play in the third term, effectively winning the contest by keeping the Blues scoreless, despite only adding one major of their own.
But with a 14-point lead in a low-scoring match, it was also going to be hard to peg back as hard as the Blues tried, giving their all finishing strongly with two goals to one, going down gallantly by nine points.
Hunter Greaves, Jemma Martin, Samson Clementine, Isabella-Rose Burt and Kayden Smith (two goals) all played good games for the Blues.
After the loss the Blues dropped to fourth on the ladder but still have a one-match buffer
over Lindenow.
Despite going into the under 15 match as underdogs, Orbost took the match right up to the higher-rated Magpies.
With Lucknow struggling to thread the ball through the goals in the first half, the Blues led by seven points at half time, but the Magpies found their range in the second half, kicking 10 goals to four to run out easy winners by 27 points.
Jimmy Hardy and Alexander Jenkins kicked two goals each for Orbost, whose best players were Zaid Nordstrom, Charlie Joiner, Jenkins and Harley Evelyn.
After a competition break for the King’s Birthday holiday long weekend, Orbost’s next match will be on June 15 when they host Bairnsdale at Lochiel Park.
