Former Orbost local, Richard “Dick” Roebuck was awarded a Lifetime Membership in the RSL recently, in appreciation for his decades of service to Australian communities.
Georgine Harrison was also awarded a bouquet, along with the Orbost RSL Sub-Branch’s heart-felt thanks, for her years of volunteering support.
“Considering the many ways that Dick and Georgine have served their country, and our communities, this recognition is long overdue, and the least that we could do,” Orbost RSL Sub-Branch president, Carl Turney said.
Long-standing members of the Orbost RSL joined in warmly honouring Dick and Georgine at the local hall, located at the corner of Browning and Raymond streets.
Mr Roebuck has served 15 years in the Royal Australian Navy, achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer in Marine Technical Propulsion.
Before moving to Orbost, he held a range of positions in the RSL in Yeronga, and formed the Naval Association Sub-Branch there.
In Orbost, Dick joined and later became president of the local RSL, presiding over the annual remembrance ceremonies, representing Orbost in regional and state-wide meetings and managing the Sub-Branch.
As an RSL Welfare Officer, Dick helped numerous veterans find ways to successfully manage their challenges financially, emotionally and physically.
Dick also represented the RSL to the St James Anglican Memorial Church.
He likewise served on the Orbost Education Centre Management Committee and on the Orbost Regional Health Quality Care Committee.
During the Black Summer Bushfires, Mr Roebuck was instrumental in aiding the Army’s Operation Assist, veteran’s Operation Veteran Assist and more than 2000 military reserve and overseas personnel located at Lochiel Park.
Still during those fires, Dick spent any spare time assisting with welfare services at the St James Hall.
He is truly a champion and living example of service to country and community.
