This coming Monday morning (August 18) at 11am, the Orbost RSL will honour the sacrifices made by Vietnam War veterans.
The public are encouraged to join in, at the town Cenotaph.
Those in other areas are welcome to visit their local Cenotaphs and memorials.
August 18 was chosen to represent the entire conflict, because it was the date of the most costly single engagement: The Battle of Long Tan, where 18 Aussies lost their lives, and 24 more were physically injured.
The RSL has a new street sign to remind locals of this annual event, at the corner of Nicholson and Salisbury streets.
“Our region (and local RSLs) should take pride in having warmly welcomed and helped those who returned from the horrors of that war, back in that time,” Orbost RSL Sub-Branch president, Carl Turney said.
“And we should never forget the anxiety and loss also endured by the families and friends of those who served in Vietnam.”
The RSL actively commemorates the sacrifices made by veterans, from all the service branches and in all of our conflicts.
It also provides a wide variety of support to all veterans (regardless of RSL membership).
Veterans are encouraged to contact the RSL for assistance, free of any costs or obligations.
Such support is the primary goal of the RSL.
Membership in the RSL itself is not limited to former service personnel, nor to just their families.
The general public is also encouraged to join as social members.
