Orbost Snowy Rovers’ under 13 team kept their season alive with a hard fought elimination final victory over Lucknow last Sunday at the Bairnsdale City Oval.
In a match that wasn’t without controversy and spite, the Blues established a lead in the second term, holding off the gallant Magpies, who played the final term one short after a three quarter time melee.
It was the second straight win for the Blues over Lucknow, having beaten them in the final round at Lochiel Park a week earlier by six points.
The sides sized each other up in the opening term, with neither side able to gain ascendancy, as they banked a goal apiece and went to first break all tied up.
With Hugh Scott, Chad Rogers and Hunter Greaves all finding space in the forward 50 and finishing with two goals, the Blues were able to wrestle the advantage in the middle two quarters, kicking four goals to two in middle two quarters to open up a 14-point lead by the three quarter time.
But the Magpies weren’t done, determined to keep their season alive, they dug deep in the final term, kicking two goals to one, Orbost hanging on to win a bruising encounter by eight points.
Among the best for the victors were Scott, Jasper Anderson, Greaves, Kayden Smith, Silas Martin and Rogers.
Orbost Snowy Rovers will now do battle with Lakes Entrance in a do or die preliminary final at the Bairnsdale City Oval on Sunday at 12.30pm.
