Nominations open for 2025

by
16 August 2025
in Local News

The National Trust of Australia (Victoria) is pleased to announce that nominations for the 2025 Victorian Tree of the Year have opened.

Attracting thousands of votes each year, the annual competition celebrates the significant trees that have captured the hearts of Victorians and draws attention to the vital role trees play in our environment and communities.

As the state’s leading advocate for tree protection, the National Trust has remained committed to safeguarding and celebrating Victoria’s natural heritage.

Since 1982, the organisation has classified more than 20,000 trees across 1200 locations through the National Trusts of Australia Register of Significant Trees.

To be eligible for the Victorian Tree of the Year, a nominated tree must be listed on this register.

Nominations can be submitted online until Sunday, August 31 2025 via the National Trust’s website at www.nationaltrust.org.au/treeoftheyear.

Each submission should include details about the tree and a description of why it deserves the title of 2025 Victorian Tree of the Year.

After receiving nominations by the closing date on Sunday, August 31 2025, the Significant Tree Expert Committee will then review all nominations and curate a shortlist of nine exceptional trees. Public voting will then take place online from Tuesday, September 23, to Thursday, October 23 2025.

Collette Brennan, chief executive officer of the National Trust of Australia (Victoria), is encouraging all Victorians to get involved.

“Being part of the Victorian Tree of the Year is an active and powerful way for our community to demonstrate how deeply we value our trees and their essential role in our lives,” Ms Brennan said.

“With Victoria currently lacking comprehensive policies around tree protection, it’s more important than ever to highlight the significance of these living landmarks and advocate for their preservation.

“Whether it’s the tree you pass every day on your way to work, the one at the heart of your favourite park, or a majestic giant that’s stood for generations – this is your chance to shine a spotlight on a tree that matters. “We’re calling on tree enthusiasts, nature lovers, and anyone who values our natural heritage to make a nomination.”

The Victorian Tree of the Year aims to raise awareness about the conservation of the state’s natural heritage and highlight the many benefits that trees bring to our lives – from supporting biodiversity and wildlife, to improving air quality, wellbeing and liveability.

Many trees on the Significant Tree Register are also living landmarks that hold memories, stories and deep cultural significance.

The winner of the 2025 Victorian Tree of the Year will be officially announced on Tuesday, October 28 2025.
