With the 2025/26 Gippsland Bowls Region pennant season now rapidly approaching, Orbost Bowling Club have organised two practice matches.
The first match is at Bruthen on September 28 and the second will be at Metung on October 11.
Both matches will have a barbecue lunch organised by the hosting club followed by the practice match.
Regardless of whether a bowler has played pennant before, all Orbost club members are welcome to add their name to the player list on the notice board outside the club house.
SOCIAL BOWLS
Despite the sunny conditions, Thursday was cold with a very strong wind, causing several regulars to stay away.
With a smaller number of bowlers, it was agreed to play just a friendly roll up, which ended up being 14 ends.
While there was a winning team it was decided that as a friendly match, it would be classed as a draw.
In contrast, Sunday’s afternoon of bowls proved highly social, with the best attendance of bowlers in a while.
The bowlers included three visitors, Andy and Noah from Orbost and Josh from Maffra.
With the pennant season approaching and perfect sunny weather with little breeze, it was decided to play two games of 10 ends to gain some match fitness for those who hadn’t bowled much over winter.
The results of the two games were close, with the final results again going to a countback.
The winning team on 33 points was Geoff Robinson (skip), Scott Farnell, Jurgen Fitchner and Maurice Frank with the runners-up being Peter Coulson (skip), Lyn O’Brien, Vanessa Frank and Lorraine Hawkey on 32.
The next social bowls will be on Thursday, players to be at the club no later than 12.30pm.
DRILLS AND SKILLS
The weather was back to being perfect for the Saturday morning Drills and Skills coaching session with the increased attendance of bowlers reflecting the improvement in conditions.
As the Pennant season approaches, Drills and Skills will be coming to an end.
In fact, there will be no session on Saturday September 20, so the next session will be
on Saturday, September 27 commencing at 10am.
