After years of sitting idle, Orbost’s town clock has
been repaired.
The Cenotaph that it rests in has been refurbished and made safe as well.
For years, the Orbost SubBranch of the Returned and Services League
(RSL) assumed that the Cenotaph and clock were
their responsibility.
While chasing grants from various organisations for the repair work, Orbost RSL
President Carl Turney discovered the Cenotaph was an East Gippsland Shire
Council asset.
Soon after reporting the cosmetic decline and safety hazards to the Service Centre in the local library, the shire got right on to the job.
Before Remembrance Day, loose pavers were made safe, blistered rendering was replaced, the clock was running on time, and the Cenotaph was repainted.
Mr Turney said, “The Orbost RSL warmly thanks the Service Centre staff, and the contractors involved, for restoring this solemn shrine to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.”
The RSL is active in commemorating the sacrifices made by service personnel, and providing a wide range of free support to veterans, whether current RSL members or not.
Membership in the RSL
is not limited to former service personnel, nor to just their families.
The general public is warmly encouraged to join as social members.
