Orbost Bowls Club attracted a respectable turnout for last Thursday’s social bowls session, considering the chilly overcast weather.
The format was three bowl triples playing two games of 10 ends.
As the drizzle crept in and bowlers retired to the clubrooms at the end of the matches, it was discovered that there was only one team who won both of their games.
The winners for the afternoon were Jenny Gurney (skip), Bruce Kneebone and Beryl Dyce.
Round five of the monthly Scroungers competition was the format for Sunday afternoon.
The two games of 12 ends were played in sunny but cool weather, with each bowler using three bowls.
The highest point scorers for the round were Ron Hatcher with 70 points, followed by Kneebone (53), with Dennis McCann (50) third.
After five rounds the leaderboard still shows Maurice Frank on top with an aggregate score of 232 points, followed by Jurgen Fichtner (217) and McCann (192).
The next social bowls will be on Thursday, which will be free to all bowlers attending as it was decided not to charge green fees during June and July.
Please be at the club prior to 12.30pm if you intend to bowl.
DRILLS AND SKILLS
Saturday morning’s Drills and Skills session concentrated on weighted shots, with Hatcher instructing the participating bowlers to place the bowls one metre behind without crossing the head.
Hatcher explained that bowls placed behind the head can be very useful, while short bowls are, in most cases, just in the way.
The next Drills and Skills session will be held on Saturday, June 6 starting at 10am.
