Thursday social bowls at the Orbost Bowling Club proceeded in mild, calm weather, with a smaller field than usual taking to the green as several regulars travelled away.
Those in attendance were paired up to play two games of 10 ends. Competition was tight, with plenty of quality draw bowling on display and a few close ends requiring the measuring tape to determine shot.
At the conclusion of play, two teams sat undefeated with two wins, but Lyn O’Brien (skip) and Beryl Dyce claimed overall honours for the day on a countback.
Sunday brought a return to stronger attendance figures, played under sunny but chilly winter skies accompanied by the usual friendly banter.
The format again featured two 10-end games. Emerging victorious with a win and a draw were Greg Rankin (skip), Ross O’Brien and Annette Grmusa.
The next social bowls session will take place this Thursday, with players requested to arrive at the club prior to 11.30am for draw duties.
DRILLS AND SKILLS
With regular coach Ron Hatcher away for a fortnight, club president Bruce Kneebone stepped in to lead the weekly Drills and Skills session.
A dedicated group gathered on a crisp morning to work through three tailored training exercises.
The first drill focused on delivery posture, encouraging bowlers to stay down through their release to avoid popping up too early. The second exercise challenged players to draw to ditched jacks marked on either side of the centre line, requiring two forehands and two backhands without trailing into the ditch.
The morning wrapped up with a competitive “Last Man Standing” game, where the furthest bowl from the jack was eliminated after each end. The player with the closest remaining bowl on the final end took out the title.
The next Drills and Skills session will run this Saturday at 10am, with Kneebone again at the helm.
