The Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) is urging farming families to keep child safety front of mind following a recent spate of serious on-farm accidents involving children.
To coincide with National Farm Safety Week, the VFF is issuing the reminder off the back of a number of incidents during the recent school holiday period.
VFF president Ryan Milgate said the recent incidents were a sobering reminder that on-farm safety must always remain the top priority.
“I can’t stress enough the importance of maintaining the highest possible safety standards on farm,” he said.
“Every farm accident is shocking, but when it involves a child there’s nothing worse. During school holidays we tragically see more accidents involving kids and we need to do something about it,” Mr Milgate said.
Mr Milgate said the incidents come as farming communities mark National Farm Safety Week, providing an opportunity to reflect on the importance of keeping everyone safe on Victorian farms.
“Farm safety isn’t about rules on a page. It’s about the people we love being able to come home at the end of the day,” Mr Millgate said.
“I’m encouraging farming families to make use of the VFF’s Making Our Farms Safer project, which provides practical, free resources to help identify hazards and improve safety on farms.
“Farmers can book a free farm safety visit and download the Child Safety on Farms Guide to help create a safer environment for children living on or visiting farms.
“The MOFS farm safety visits encourage everyone on farm, including children to be aware of the dangers that exist and can tailor safety advice to suit everyone’s situation.
“Every farm is different, but every family can take practical steps to make their property safer. Taking the time to review your safety practices now could prevent a tragedy in the future,” Mr Milgate said.
