Orbost Arts Centre is hanging a new display this week, with the Peter Mac Painting Project opening on Friday, October 2 at 6pm and running until Sunday, October 27.
The exhibition replaces the centre’s Beautiful Bygones antiques display, with all proceeds going to the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre for cancer research.
The arts centre also showcases a beautiful array of woodwork in the shop and gallery areas, crafted by various talented artists.
Jon Carmichael is one of the long-term feature artists whose work is well known — an accomplished, self-taught craftsman who has crafted wood for many years.
Mr Carmichael uses unique, self-sourced, select timbers to make his hand-turned masterpieces, sourcing wood from outback areas in Queensland and using the dense timbers of the gidgee tree, dead finish woods, she-oak, the budgeroo tree and rosewood. All pieces are his own original designs in woodturning, such as bowls, lamps and small artistic and useful objects, making special pieces as gifts for Christmas.
More wood projects are happening at the centre after a big year exploring the theme.
Wood Inc classes, teaching basic construction and woodturning and supported by the Orbost Education Centre, are currently full, but inquiries and bookings can be made at the centre for next year.
The Orbost Arts Centre building has received much acclaim and an award for its architecture over the years, with its warm and welcoming rooms.
The hall upstairs provides a regular meeting place for all occasions, available to book for professional development, project planning, meetings, discussions, workshopping, music, dance, theatre, exhibitions and other arts practice and performances.
DJ Ray Chrome recently introduced a new style to the space with his music at the monthly Sunday Sessions, featuring Rock n Roll, Rockabilly and Swing sounds.
The centre welcomes artists of all mediums to come and play or display their work, and to apply for shop retail space.
Artwork, greeting cards and small gifts are available for sale in the front area, with the front windows and counter circulating local projects, publications and advertising.
Affiliations and collaborations are strongly encouraged to strengthen the creative culture for East Gippsland.
For project enquiries, contact the front desk via email or visit the website for more details.
