Estuary opened

Mallacoota estuary was artificially opened yesterday.

East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority (EGCMA) said that recent rainfall had filled Mallacoota Inlet to around 1.2m.

The EGCMA undertook water quality monitoring over the weekend, with no concerns of dissolved oxygen levels in the estuary to the lead up to the opening.

The estuary was high enough to attempt an opening, with favourable weather and tide conditions.

Parks Victoria worked with contractors to open the entrance. The lake levels are now subsiding.

“We would like to thank the local landholders and community of Mallacoota for working with us in the lead up to, and during the estuary opening,” EGCMA chief executive officer, Graeme Dear, said.
