The Orbost and District Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ODCCI) has formally requested that Parks Victoria reconsider the closure of the suspension bridges on the McKenzie River rainforest walk.
The suspension bridges were unexpectedly closed to the public in February 2024 following an engineer’s inspection.
The chamber argues the bridges, which had a previous load limit of 10 persons, could continue to be safely used with a reduced limit, suggesting a cap of six adults at a time.
They cite similar practices for road bridges, where load limits are adjusted over time as deterioration progresses and until funding for repairs is available.
Parks Victoria staff have indicated plans to demolish and rebuild the bridges, though budget and timeline details remain uncertain.
Given the extended lead time expected for designing and funding new structures, the chamber emphasises the immediate negative impact on the local tourism economy.
