A determined Orbost Snowy Rovers has defeated Lakes Entrance by 52 points during round 10 of the East Gippsland Football Netball League at Lochiel Park.
Disappointed to be beaten in the dying seconds the previous week by ladder leader, Lucknow, the Blues found themselves two games outside of the top four with plenty of work to do if they are to match last season’s effort of playing finals.
If that wasn’t enough incentive Orbost was also keen to honour club legend, Russell Christy who passed away last week.
The Seagulls were competitive in every quarter but the bigger bodied Blues midfielders, led by co-captain Braeden Ross, Mitchell Dignan and Gus Rogers were in-strumental all day in pumping the ball forward to a potent forward line which delivered 19 goals for the afternoon.
At nine goals to six at half time, Lakes Entrance was still in the game, but a five-goal to two effort from the Blues in the third term quickly put an unlikely Seagulls victory out of the equation.
Both sides had impressive key forwards, Blues co-captain, Hamish Nettleton continuing his recent good form spending his afternoon closer to goal this week, finishing with eight goals to take his season total to 28, where he currently sits equal second on the competition award with Wy Yung’s Jack Betts and Boisdale Briagolong goal sneak Jimmy Reeves.
He received great support from brother Curtley who played further from goal than usual and Mitch Fenner, who were both rewarded with two goals apiece.
Immensely talented Seagull Tom Hudson added another five goals to take his season’s tally to 34 to maintain an advantage in the league goalkicking.
His kicking skills continue to amazing spectators, teammates and opponents.
The Blues rammed home another five goals in the final term, but the young Seagulls outfit never gave in, adding three of their
own.Max Welsh continues to go from strength-to-strength across half back, his long left foot kicking again proving beneficial.
He continues to combine well with Sean Nippress, Lachlan Osborn, Jordan Ross and Cody Robertson, who is putting together a good season on the last line of defence.
Thirds player Toby Herbert continues to impress and doesn’t look out of place at senior level, having now strung together six games in the row, featuring in the best in the last four.
Frankston Bombers recruit Fletcher Morgan was an interesting addition for the Blues, showing that he is more than capable of matching it in the East Gippsland Football Netball League.
