Sisters Ashlea and Elsie DeVries had been busy making beaded bracelets and heat packs to sell at the Slab Hut Carpark Market last Saturday. Despite the weather concerns, almost 60 people wandered through the historic Slab Hut to check out the diverse array of stalls.

Despite concerns about the weather last Saturday, the rain held off allowing the Slab Hut Carpark Market to be a resounding success.

The event featured eight diverse stalls offering a variety of goods, including books, plants, knitted and crocheted items, decorative hats and unique trinkets.

The community turned out in impressive numbers with 57 people taking the opportunity to wander through the historic Slab Hut.

Bree Kenny, coordinator of the Orbost Visitor Information Centre, expressed her delight at the turnout and the smooth running of the event.

“It was wonderful to see so many people out supporting and enjoying the market. The weather cooperated, and the community spirit was fantastic,” Bree said.

The market not only provided an opportunity for locals to purchase unique items but also highlighted the Slab Hut as a valuable resource in the community. Bree and her team of volunteers, affectionately known as ‘vollies,’ have worked hard to enhance the offerings at the Slab Hut, and the success of this event is a testament to their ongoing dedication to ensuring the service is not only an assist for the visitors to the region, but locals also appreciate what is on offer.

Plans are already in motion for future markets, and Bree encourages anyone interested in becoming a stallholder or volunteer to contact the Slab Hut for more information.

Audrey van den Berg (right) sold some of her surplus native plants and had a chat with Bemm River locals, Paul and Karen Brown who ventured in for the morning.
Doug Kerr’s bric-a- brac stall was popular proving that one mans trash is another’s treasure.
Volunteer at the Slab Hut for 17 years, Bev Weir made good use of her beautiful handwriting by signing the guest register as the visitors arrived.
Volunteer, Marie Donchi settled in by the fire and greeted guests as they visited.
Volunteer at the Slab Hut, Yvonne Reid has a chat with Christine Townsend who came inside to check her stockpiles of her gift cards which are on sale in the hut.
