The education team from Disability Sport and Recreation brought the Wheel Talk program to Newmerella Primary School last Thursday, with Peter, the main guest speaker, and Luke leading the event.
Wheel Talk is an educational initiative aimed at promoting diversity, acceptance and inclusion among school children through the engaging activity of wheelchair basketball. The program emphasises the importance of understanding and embracing differences, fostering a more inclusive and supportive community.
Peter, a paraplegic, captivated the students with his personal life story, highlighting the daily challenges he faces due to his physical disability.
His inspiring narrative provided valuable insights into resilience and adaptability, encouraging the young audience to develop empathy and appreciation for people with disabilities.
Children from the prep and grade one class, along with students from grades two, three and four had the opportunity to participate in a thrilling game of wheelchair basketball.
The experience was not only fun and competitive but also educational, as it allowed the students to physically engage with the concepts of inclusion and teamwork.
This impactful visit was made possible through the funding and support of Disability Sport and Recreation.
The organisation’s dedication to promoting disability awareness and breaking down societal barriers was clearly demonstrated through this program.
The school community expressed their gratitude to Peter and Luke for their visit, acknowledging the significant role they played in educating the students about the importance of inclusion and diversity.
The event left a lasting impression on both the children and the staff, reinforcing the values of acceptance and understanding within the school environment.
