The Orbost and District Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ODCCI), led by community member Sharon Kurrle, has championed the introduction of the “Bins for Blokes” initiative in Orbost.
This national program aims to provide public disposal bins for men and boys using incontinence products, facilitating their participation in daily activities by offering accessible places to discard these items.
In Australia, 1.34 million boys and men live with incontinence, stressing the lack of disposal options often prevents them from engaging fully in community life.
Without proper facilities, those affected face challenges in finding suitable places to dispose of products, making outings difficult.
The chamber acted by writing to the East Gippsland Shire Council in May, following the success of a trial in six locations across the shire.
“The shire came to the party,” president of the Orbost and District Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Samantha Reynolds said, sharing the good news that the council expanded the initiative to include seven additional locations, including the public toilets at Newmerella Recreation Reserve and Wolseley Street, Orbost.
“We are thrilled to have them located in our local toilets, males dealing with incontinence issues can now dispose of their products in a dignified way while enjoying our local community,” Ms Reynolds said.
This development marks a significant step towards supporting men with incontinence in Orbost, reducing barriers to their social participation, and enhancing the overall quality of life for those affected. For further information on the initiative visit the Bins for Blokes website.
