Blackie Paten may not be on the tools any more, however, loves the social element of his time at the shed with friends such as Daryl Jenkins.

The Orbost Men’s Shed is extending an invitation to local men of all ages to get involved in a community-driven initiative aimed at bringing people together through projects, skills-sharing and social interaction.

The shed, located at 24 Tyndall Street, Orbost, operates on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8am to 2pm, offering an opportunity to repair, create and connect with others.

Founded on the principles of support and engagement, the program has become a well-loved meeting point in the community.

Participants work on a range of woodworking and repair projects, with some members focusing on personal creations while others are dedicated to helping with community initiatives.

The group is proud to be entirely self-funded, relying on donations, grants and completing local jobs to support their efforts.

The Orbost Men’s Shed has made a significant impact through its contributions to the community.

For example, they’ve crafted picnic tables for the Orbost Neighbourhood House and created the iconic timber Christmas trees that line Nicholson Street during the festive season.

Local op shops also benefit from the shed’s expertise, bringing in furniture that requires repairs before being put up for sale.

Community members are welcome to bring odd jobs to the shed for assistance as well.

The shed is not just about woodworking, though.

For many of the men, the appeal lies in the social connection it fosters.

Many attend for the camaraderie, the chance to meet like-minded individuals and the mental health benefits that come from working together on meaningful tasks.

A key figure at the shed is Kevin Ingram, who has taken on the crucial task of providing meals for the group.

Although he doesn’t work with traditional tools, his contribution is just as valued.

On a recent visit by the Snowy River Mail, Ingram was serving up hearty rissoles with onion gravy and vegetables, a lunchtime staple offered for a small fee.

With a focus on both personal fulfilment and community service, the Orbost Men’s Shed continues to be a beacon of connection and support in Orbost.

Those interested in joining can simply drop by during operating hours or reach out for more information.

Paul Faulkner has been sanding back the potholders from Orbost Community College before he laser engraves the logo on them.
Kevin Ingram and Bill Macalister caught up in the dining room over a cup of tea.
Alan Donchi works on some timber panels.
Mark ‘Bobo’ Johnstone works on the railings which will be replaced on the front of the Orbost Club Hotel.
This picnic table created by the Orbost Men’s Shed will be re-homed to the Orbost Neighbourhood House.
