The Home and Community Support team at Gippsland Lakes Complete Health (GLCH) delivers invaluable care to older community members, helping them live independently at home for longer while staying connected and supported.
GLCH’s community support workers are the backbone of its services that cater to aged care clients, showcasing tireless dedication, compassion and commitment to improving the lives of older Australians.
Their efforts are highly regarded not only by GLCH but by the clients they care for.
One such client is Bob Reed, a former stock and station agent with a lifelong passion for cattle farming.
After losing his wife and giving up driving 11 months ago, Bob has come to greatly appreciate the care and companionship provided by GLCH’s community support workers.
“Since my wife passed and I stopped driving, I really look forward to the workers’ visits. They help with housework and provide much-needed companionship,” Bob said.
“Their service has been crucial in allowing me to stay at home on the farm I love.”
For Bob, it’s not just about the practical help. He looks forward to the moment when his support worker takes a break to chat with him over a cup of tea.
“I enjoy when they finish their work and stay for a cuppa and a chat,” Bob added.
For GLCH community support worker Michelle, the work is more than a job – it’s a calling.
“I’m passionate about my role in home care,” Michelle said.
“Every day, I make a real difference, helping the elderly stay in their homes and feel valued. After 35 years, the joy and connections I’ve made have profoundly enriched my life.
“It’s more than cleaning; it’s about the bonds we form and the comfort we provide. I cherish my job and the opportunity to spread joy and care.”
Another support worker, Amanda, finds immense satisfaction in her role.
“It’s the job I get the most from,” she said.
“I get to support, chat, empathise, and make someone’s life just a little easier – and most importantly, make them smile, even if it’s just for a short while.”
GLCH is deeply grateful for the dedication and compassion of its community support workers, whose efforts make a profound difference in the lives of the people they care for.
Anne-Maree Kaser, chief executive officer of GLCH, praised the organisation’s Home and community support employees.
“Every day, our community support workers perform their roles with immense dedication and compassion, often going above and beyond to ensure the wellbeing of our older community members,” she said.
“We encourage the community to
recognise these quiet achievers – our superheroes – who care for our loved
ones with professionalism and compassion. Their invaluable contributions deserve our deepest gratitude and appreciation.”
