The beginning of October has seen significant progress in the Save the Snowy Rail Bridge project, as the team gears up for the installation of a new deck at the western end of the structure.
Early preparations kicked off this month, setting the stage for a major step forward in restoring this iconic landmark.
An innovative approach is being used in the restoration – a technique known as the air deck.
As the name implies, the new deck will be positioned above the old deck level, leaving a small air gap between the two.
This method is designed to preserve what remains of the original deck while maintaining the integrity of the historic structure underneath.
Decades of neglect have taken a toll on the old deck, which suffered significant damage after more than 30 years of ballast weighing it down.
Despite these challenges, progress is being made: safety rails have been installed and the first sections of the mesh decking are now in place.
However, while the work on the bridge is advancing, the current funding for stage one will only cover the installation of the new deck and allow for public access at both ends of the bridge, leaving the middle section closed off for now.
In addition, this phase of the project will deliver two new car parks, a range of informative signage, interpretive displays and an under-bridge walk at the western end – all expected to take shape over the next few months.
Community members and supporters of the project remain hopeful for a fully completed bridge once funds are secured to complete it.
The Save the Snowy Rail Bridge project team remains committed to preserving this historic structure for future generations, pushing forward in their efforts to secure additional funding to realise their vision of a restored bridge that can be fully enjoyed by the public.
