A milestone event was held last week with student writing of all shapes and sizes on display at the Lakes Entrance Mechanics Hall, with Orbost Community College featuring prominently.

The Far East Schools Network put on the showcase to celebrate and share the wonderful work of students and teachers across the network.

Schools from Omeo to Mallacoota had student writing on display while students from prep to year 12 had work exhibited.

The range was magnificent and included poetry, stories, persuasive and non-fiction, the ideas amazing and creative. Student illustrations added interest and colour.

With more than seven hundred pieces, there was something for everyone.

Across four days, 350 students were able to view the display firsthand. They took great delight in finding their work, along with that of siblings or friends.

Students from Omeo to Cann River travelled by bus rides to view the display. A scavenger hunt added an extra element and encouraged students to look more deeply at the pieces of writing.

Dr David Howes, the department secretary, travelled from Melbourne to open and view the showcase. He will be spreading the word about how the Far East Schools are working together to nurture young writers, while providing opportunities for teachers and families to view an extensive collection of writing.

Feedback from students, teachers and parents indicate that it was a magnificent event and included comments such as:

– “Very good writing from all kids. The wording, the way stories captivated you. So many fantastic pieces. A lot of future authors in the making. Keep up the good work.

– “It is so absolutely amazing. I love it sooo much. It is so interesting looking at how others write. My piece is called Spell Book Magic.”

– “Loved seeing what students in other schools are writing about. Outstanding.”

– “The writing pieces are amazing, foundation to year 12. Everyone did an amazing job.”
