Fourteen pre-service teachers from Melbourne lived in Bairnsdale as part of the 'Teach Rural' program last year, enjoying time out from their program at Lightfoot Wines. Another 38 pre-service teachers will take part in the same program starting on November 18.

In a collaborative effort to bring young talent and new perspectives to rural education, the Country Education Partnership (CEP), Monash University, and schools in and around Bairnsdale are excited to welcome 38 pre-service teachers from Melbourne this month.

These young educators will embark on a transformative experience, spending three to four weeks in local schools as part of the Teach Rural program, starting November 18.

Participating schools include Bairnsdale Secondary College, Bairnsdale Primary School, Lucknow Primary School, Nicholson Primary School, Lindenow Primary School and Lindenow South Primary School.

These placements are designed to provide the next generation of teachers with a firsthand understanding of the opportunities and challenges in rural education, potentially influencing where they choose to pursue their careers.

The pre-service teachers, all from Monash University, bring with them a diverse range of backgrounds and a shared passion for teaching. Their time in Bairnsdale won’t be limited to the classroom — they’ll also be engaging with the local community, contributing to the local economy and experiencing the rich culture and natural beauty of the area. Activities planned include a visit to Buchan Caves, a Troy Cassar-Daley concert and various other adventures that highlight what rural Victoria has to offer.

The Teach Rural program, facilitated by CEP and supported by the Department of Education, provides invaluable support to the participating teachers through experienced mentors and staff.

Local mentors Dave Love and Heather Macalister, along with CEP chief executive officer Mark McLay, are eager to discuss the benefits and unique opportunities this program offers for both the students and the community.

To officially welcome the pre-service teachers, a special ceremony will be held at the Mitchell River Tavern on Monday, November 18, from 5pm to 7pm. This event is an opportunity for the community to connect with these future educators and celebrate their commitment to rural education.
