Local artist Josie Jarvis was commissioned by Down Syndrome Victoria (DSV) to create three paintings that reflect her vision of inclusion.

With a passion for depicting nature — especially flowers, birds and animals — Josie chose to focus on birds, as birds in nature; “Get along even though they are all different.”

DSV found Josie through her Instagram social media account (@josiejarvisart).

The paintings were presented to DSV’s advisory committee, which includes several members with Down Syndrome.

After careful consideration, the committee selected one of Josie’s artworks to feature on a new 2024 badge.

The badge was officially launched at DSV’s major fundraising event StepUP! for Downs Syndrome Victoria 2024 as part of October Down Syndrome Awareness month. StepUP! Day held in Princes Park in Carlton, was a fantastic family fun day event attended by hundreds with music, entertainment, food, exhibits, stalls and activities for all ages, raising awareness and celebrating the achievements of people living with Down Syndrome.

Josie’s stall was particularly popular.

A highlight of Josie’s day was when she was presented with the pin she had designed by renowned actor Stefan Dennis, known for his role as Paul Robinson on Neighbours.

During the presentation, she couldn’t help but compliment him on his acting talent. Josie’s work not only showcases her artistic abilities but also promotes a powerful message of inclusion within the community. Her fame is spreading through her Instagram account, and she has recently received two more orders for commissions, one from Western Australia.

Josie Jarvis grew up in a creatively rich household where artistic expression was encouraged from an early age. Art classes were always her passion throughout school, sparking a lifelong love for the visual arts.

At 17, Josie completed a Certificate I in Visual Arts (2011), followed by a Certificate II the following year, further solidifying her skills and artistic direction.

Josie’s practice spans multiple mediums, with a particular love for acrylics and watercolours. Her work is known for its whimsical characters and uplifting, joyful themes, reflecting her vibrant outlook on life. Living by the water in Eagle Point, Victoria, she draws inspiration from her serene surroundings, infusing her art with a sense of tranquility and playfulness.

As a member of The Colour Gang, a Distinctive Options Noweyung group program, Josie’s achievements are a source of inspiration to her friends and peers. Recently Josie has expanded her art turning her painting designs into cards and prints, and fabric – that latter being made into cushions, scarves and other clothing.

Josie currently has an exhibition of her latest paintings at the East Gippsland Art Gallery running until November 30.
