The highlight of the last week’s action at the Orbost Bowling Club was the huge win by the division two side in Gippsland Bowls Region midweek pennant.
The Green Machine humbled Howitt Park at home, 85-39, winning all rinks in a polished display.
Gwen Hatcher, Bruce Kneebone, Lynette Broersen and Lynette O’Brien led the rout, winning 34-8.
Geoff Lynn, Margaret Coulton, Jurgen Fichtner, Janice Lynn (27-13) and Beryl Dyce, Des Edwards, Maurice Frank and Ron Hatcher (24-18) were all among the winners.
Gaining all 14 match points has cemented Orbost’s hold on second place on the ladder.
In weekend pennant, division one drew 64-64 against Metung in an away match last Saturday gaining eight of the 14 match points on offer.
Rink winners for Orbost were Geoff Lynn, Maurice Frank, Peter Coulton, Geoff Robinson (25-20) and Adrian Culph, Bruce Kneebone, Karen Chenney and Geoff Aitken (31-11).
The result leaves Orbost at 11th on their ladder with only three matches left in the home and away season.
The next match is a home match against Paynesville on Saturday, which will be the last match before the Christmas break, with the competition resuming again on January 18.
GBR MEN’S STATE PAIRS FINAL
Orbost’s Brad Lancaster competed in the 2024/25 Gippsland Bowls Region state pairs final partnering former Lakes Entrance teammate, Brendan Addison, who now plays for West Sale.
The classic encounter was a high standard game played in great spirit, with a twist at the end.
Metung’s Ron McDonald and playing partner David Roberts were facing defeat when on the last end, when they turned a four shot deficit into a one shot victory, winning 16-15.
SOCIAL
Both social bowls afternoons last week were played in hot sunny weather with
a similar format of two games with eight ends on each day.
The winning team for Thursday was Des Edwards (skip), Margaret Coulton, Maurice Frank and Lilia Scarborough, while Sunday’s winning pair was Greg Rankin (skip) and Trevor Hawkey.
The next social bowls will be on Thursday, while social bowls over the Christmas/New Year break will be on a more ad hoc basis depending on who turns up to play on the Thursday and Sunday afternoons.
BAREFOOT/TWILIGHT
The last barefoot bowls for 2024 will be held on Friday night, and will resume in 2025 on January 3.
The club will be opened at 5.30pm and people can come along at any time after that and stay for as long as they wish.
The club’s barbecue facilities will be ready for use, so why not bring along your own meal and make an evening of it.
The licensed bar will also be available, bowls will be provided and if required some training in the basics of bowling can be arranged.
