Gippsland Region Bowls weekend pennant resumed on the weekend, with Orbost going down to arch rival, Lakes Entrance 1 at the Lakes Entrance Bowling Club, 63-49.
The only victorious rink on the day was Geoff Aitkin, Karen Chenney, Bruce Kneebone and Beryl Dyce, impressively winning 21-15, the other two teams lost 17-21 and 11-27.
Two match points were gained but this was insufficient to hold Orbost’s place on its ladder and it has now dropped to 12th place.
Due to Australia Day, there are no pennant matches this week, with the last round of the competition to be played on the Saturday, February 1, with Orbost at home against Sale 1.
SOCIAL
Both Thursday’s and Sunday’s social bowls afternoons were well attended, with Thursday’s session featuring two matches of 10 ends, played in fours, in cool overcast conditions.
Victorious were Bruce Kneebone (skip), Trevor Hawkey, Scott Farnell and Jan Lynn.
Sunday’s fours games saw two games of eight ends played in warm sunny weather with two visitors participating in Linda and Niels.
Winners were Steve Holgate (skip) Jurgen Fichtner, Greg Rankin and Lyn O’Brien.
There will be no social bowls on Thursday due to the club men’s and ladies championship pairs being played.
BAREFOOT/TWILIGHT
There was an even better turn out of barefoot bowlers for last week’s twilight bowls session, with a mixture of people from both Marlo and Orbost.
Although the barbecue wasn’t required and there was no spectacular sunset as on the previous Friday, the majority of players stayed on the green until after 8pm with a variety of bowling styles on display.
A few late comers kept bowling until the light faded when they decided to retire into the clubhouse for a last drink from the bar.
Twilight Bowls will be on again this Friday and people are welcome to come along any time after 5.30pm.
GIPPSLAND BOWLS REGION EVENTS
The busy regional event calendar continued last weekend, with Orbost’s Lancaster defeating Bairnsdale’s Stewart Pyers 25-9 in the men’s state singles championship qualifier.
Metung and Lakes Entrance Bowling Clubs hosted the early rounds of the state mixed pairs qualifier.
The quarter, semi and grand finals will culminate at Lakes Entrance on February 2, with Lancaster and Robin Kellow qualified for the quarter finals.
